NIKOLAï CLAVIER

Film Composer

Nikolaï Clavier (1989) is an award-winning composer and viola player based in the Netherlands. He graduated with a Master in Film Scoring from the Conservatory of Amsterdam in 2020 and a Master of Music at Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in 2018. As a composer with a classical background, he has in the past 10 years built up a repertoire of over 200 compositions and arrangements, including the scoring of 18 short films, 6 commercials, two features and a video game in the past four years.  Aside from working actively as a film composer, Clavier is the violist in the twice award-winning Arthema String Quartet. He is currently working as a film and media composer in Utrecht, collaborating with producers such as Interakt Studios, Levitate Film and Black Bee Productions. Clavier's musical pieces are characterized by a complex sense of detail and a rich harmonic language.

The most popular works from Nikolaï Clavier include his three graduation films at the Dutch Film Academy Waarom Bleef Je Niet Voor Mij? (2020) (winner: Student academy Awards, VPRO Documentaireprijs 2020, AHK eindwerksprijs & publiekprijs 2020, KNF Award 2020, and 9 more), Terug Naar Zotteken Waes (2020) (selection: In the Palace Short Film Festival 2021, Imagine Film Festival 2021, winner Santiago Film Festival) and Blauwe Maandag which won him the prestigious Buma Music in Motion New Talent Award in 2021. Clavier has worked with international artists such as Aleksander Rybak, Guro Kleven Hagen, Jeanine Jansen and Jan van Duikeren, and in 2013 he was solo violist in the acclaimed production of Les Misèrables at Kilden Concert Hall. He has also performed with Oslo Camerata, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian Brocasting Orchestra, and is currently playing in Dordrecht Kamerorkest and Holland Symfonie Orkest.

Through 4 years of academic research, Clavier has developed an expertise in string scoring. His first research, “Orchestrating Cinematic String Quartets” (2018), won the 1st prize in the international Fontys Artistic Research competition and his second research, “Extended String Quartet Techniques in Drone-Based Film Scoring” (2020) got a lot of attention from the academic community.  He has a unique expertise with regards to solo string techniques and is routinely invited to give lectures in various academic institutions (Codarts, Fontys, CvA).
